OptyTrades — Daily Market Brief

Thursday, September 3, 2026 · Pre-market · Data: OptyTrades screener (prev. close)

Session Recap — Wednesday, September 2, 2026

All four major indexes closed higher Wednesday. The S&P 500 rose 0.46% to 7,667, the Dow added 0.56% to 53,062, and the Nasdaq gained 0.45% to 26,218 as the session balanced labour-market unease against a resilient-consumer backdrop. The Russell 2000 outperformed, gaining 1.13%. The VIX tumbled 6.98% to 15.2, its lowest level in weeks.

The session opened with some volatility. Easing crude and yields helped major indexes return to steady by the open after overnight weakness, as Middle East skirmishes continued and ADP jobs growth weakened. Markets recovered through the day, aided by strong results from Dell (DELL) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW).

What Led, What Lagged

From Sep 2 dated closes across a 2,882-name universe: 1,948 advancers, 861 decliners, 73 flat — a 67.6% advance rate.

Leaders: Basic Materials (median +2.01%, 122 of 137 names up), Communication Services (median +1.87%, 87 of 106 up), Financial Services (median +1.51%, 376 of 465 up), and Healthcare (median +1.13%). Energy gained a median +0.50%; Technology a more modest +0.33%.

Laggards: The "Other" bucket was the sole negative sector (median –0.22%), while Utilities (median –0.03%) and Real Estate (median +0.08%) essentially flatlined.

Overnight & This Morning

Gold jumped, with spot climbing toward $4,385 an ounce, while the dollar index eased, reflecting demand for havens ahead of Friday's payrolls report.

Futures as of brief time (2026-09-03, ~10:23 ET):

FutureLevelChange
S&P7,672.25–0.06%
Nasdaq29,126–0.21%
Dow53,153+0.06%
Russell2,952.5–0.21%
Crude Oil$92.60+1.75%
Gold$4,470+1.25%

Equity futures are tilting modestly lower after yesterday's gains. Crude is pushing higher — oil above $92 keeps energy names in focus.

Macro calendar (Sep 3): ISM Services PMI is today's higher-profile release; services is where sticky inflation largely lives and it carries the larger share of the economy.

The week's big data point arrives Friday with the August jobs report.

Futures are pricing roughly a 70% chance of a quarter-point hike at the September 15–16 Fed meeting , per The Rio Times Online's global economy briefing (Sep 3, 2026). The current Fed funds target range stands at 3.50–3.75%.

VIX (Sep 2 close)15.20
VIX3M (Sep 2 close)17.73
VIX / VIX3M ratio0.857
Term structureContango
10-Year Treasury yield4.80% (unch, 0 bp)

The term structure is in normal contango — VIX at 15.20 sits well below VIX3M at 17.73, with the ratio at 0.857. No near-inversion signal. The VIX has drifted flat on a week-over-week basis (–1.6% from Aug 25's 15.45 close), consistent with a market that is neither pressing fear nor complacent. The deployment regime stays in the Greed band (14–16).

ATM-straddle expected moves (last-session marks — reference levels only, not predictions):

1-Week (Sep 4)Monthly (Sep 30)
SPY ($765.16)±$5.65 / ±0.74% · range 759.51–770.81±$20.40 / ±2.67% · range 744.76–785.56

Options markets are pricing a very contained near-term move — SPY's weekly straddle implies less than 1% in either direction through Friday. The monthly range widens to roughly 2.7% for SPY and 3.9% for QQQ, which keeps premium modest on near-dated strikes.

⚠️ Risk Flags

Ladder PCG CSP $16.50 — expiry Sep 4 — ITM PCG closed at $13.33, placing this put 23.78% in-the-money. Breakeven is $16.20. With one trading day left to expiry, this position carries assignment risk — assignment at $16.50 would result in acquiring shares at a cost basis of $16.20 (after premium received). PCG fell 5.19% in yesterday's session and is down 26.84% over the past five sessions. This is a known risk event, not automatically a realised loss.

Ladder CCL CSP $25.00 — expiry Sep 4 — ITM CCL closed at $23.74, placing this put 5.31% in-the-money. Breakeven is $24.64. Assignment risk is elevated with one day to expiry. CCL is down 7.23% over five sessions. The Monthly book also holds a CCL CSP $22 (expiry Oct 16) — that leg remains out-of-the-money with a 7.33% cushion.

Monthly CRDO CSP $200 — expiry Oct 16 — ITM CRDO closed at $165.22 — 21.05% in-the-money. Breakeven is $187.70. The Motley Fool (Sep 2) reported on the sharp single-session decline. Zacks Investment Research also covered CRDO in the context of AI infrastructure names on Sep 2. The stock is down 27.05% over five sessions. Assignment at $200 would carry a meaningful mark-to-market gap versus current price; this position requires active monitoring through October expiry.

Ladder AFRM CSP $72 — expiry Sep 4 — thin cushion AFRM closed at $74.09, leaving only a 2.82% cushion above the $72 strike. Breakeven is $69.76. AFRM rallied 5.93% yesterday. Cushion is narrow with one day remaining.

Ladder UBER CSP $74 — expiry Sep 4 — thin cushion UBER closed at $76.45, a 3.20% cushion above the $74 strike. Breakeven is $73.52. The Motley Fool (Sep 3) published a growth-stock comparison involving UBER; GlobeNewswire noted a cancelled media event related to Uber unionisation in British Columbia.

Earnings this week — held names reporting: None of the names we hold in any book report during the current week per the OptyTrades earnings calendar.

Weekly v1 LUV — 5-day flag The Weekly v1 CC on LUV ($45 strike, Dec 18 expiry) saw LUV drop 5.07% over five sessions. The position sits 16.55% out-of-the-money with a breakeven of $43.64 — not in immediate danger, but worth noting in the context of airline sector softness.

Held-Name News

SMCI (Weekly v1 + Ladder): Zacks Investment Research (Sep 2) grouped SMCI alongside NVIDIA and other AI infrastructure names in an analyst blog. A separate Zacks piece on Vertiv's recent correction also referenced the broader AI server segment. SMCI closed +0.79% on the session.

HPQ (Ladder): Zacks Investment Research (Sep 2) covered Apple's leadership transition — John Ternus taking the CEO role — which generated broad interest in PC and peripheral hardware names. HPQ closed +2.14%.

HOOD (Ladder): Zacks (Sep 2) reported Interactive Brokers saw a 23% year-over-year rise in client daily average revenue trades (DARTs) in August 2026, a broadly positive signal for retail brokerage volume. A separate Zacks piece examined Schwab's product diversification. HOOD closed +3.36%.

AFRM (Ladder + Monthly): Zacks (Sep 2) covered buy-now-pay-later competitor Sezzle growing its merchant network — context for the BNPL sector more broadly. AFRM closed +5.93%.

UBER (Ladder): The Motley Fool (Sep 3) published a high-growth stock comparison; GlobeNewswire noted a cancelled media event on Uber unionisation in British Columbia's Interior. UBER closed +1.61%.

CRDO (Monthly): The Motley Fool (Sep 2) explained the session's 20% plunge. A Sep 3 Motley Fool piece continued to highlight CRDO among AI stocks. The sharp single-session decline drove CRDO deeply ITM on the Monthly CSP — see Risk Flags above.

Top-5 Candidates

Screener source: OptyTrades production API. Prices and IV are prior-session (Sep 2) closes. Strike marks are last-session traded prices — reference levels only, not executable quotes. All yields and deltas are shown as published by the screener. One name was withheld from IV/IVR publication — see note below.

1 · UBER — Uber Technologies · Wheel Score 80/100

Prior session: closed $76.45 (+1.61% on day, –2.60% five-day) · Screener price $77.60

IV 36% with an IV Rank of 40 (rank mature, 200-day history). HV30 is 44% — IV/HV ratio 0.82, meaning implied vol is running below recent realised vol. Analyst consensus is positive (buy-leaning). EPS growth trajectory forward is accelerating (+31% per screener).

MonthlyAggressive$75Oct 936$2.303.07%31.1%35.889 ⚠️

⚠️ All three monthly strikes carry thin open interest (OI 28, 26, and 89 respectively). Fills at these marks may require patience or limit-order management; actual spreads could be wider than the marks suggest.

Earnings not until Nov 3 (BMO) — no near-term earnings pin risk. Note: the Ladder book already holds a UBER CSP ($74, Sep 4) with a thin cushion — any new consideration is additive exposure.

2 · DVN — Devon Energy · Wheel Score 76/100

Prior session: closed $49.03 (–0.04% on day, +4.70% five-day) · Screener price $49.20

IV 33% with an IV Rank of 36 (rank history 164 days — not yet mature; do not describe as a 52-week rank). HV30 36.1%; IV/HV 0.91. Dividend yield 2.12%. Energy context: crude futures +1.75% this morning. Zacks (Sep 1) covered the US-Venezuela oil deal and its implications for energy ETFs; Zacks (Sep 2) covered Par Pacific's balance sheet in an energy sector context. Analyst consensus is strongly positive per screener. Screener 52-week positioning flag notes DVN is near its 52-week high, which compresses available premium at a given OTM distance.

⚠️ Liquidity is thin across most DVN strikes. The weekly moderate $47 (OI 284) is the only strike with meaningful open interest. All other strikes carry OI under 20 — execution at marks shown is not assured; use limit orders and size accordingly.

Earnings not until Nov 4. The Motley Fool (Sep 1) separately covered Google's geothermal power deal — context for broader energy-transition flows that can affect sentiment in conventional E&P names.

3 · HAL — Halliburton · Wheel Score 84/100

Prior session: closed $37.63 (+2.26% on day, +9.26% five-day) · Screener price $37.80

IV 34% with an IV Rank of 31 (rank mature, 198-day history). HV30 34.6%; IV/HV 0.98 — implied and realised vol are nearly identical. Dividend yield 1.86%. Zacks (Sep 2) flagged HAL as rising higher than the broader market; a separate Zacks piece (Sep 1) covered energy ETF flows tied to the US-Venezuela oil deal — HAL as an oilfield services name benefits from upstream spending. Analyst consensus is positive. EPS growth is strong (+49% per screener).

⚠️ Every strike across both tenors carries thin open interest (OI 7–128). The weekly moderate $36.50 (OI 128) and weekly aggressive $37 (OI 52) are the deepest pools available; all others are very thin. Marks should be treated as directional references only.

Earnings Oct 20 (BMO) — five weeks out, well clear of the Sep 11 weekly expiry and manageable around the Oct 9 monthly.

4 · NU — Nu Holdings · Wheel Score 91/100

Prior session: closed $15.40 (+6.50% on day, +1.52% five-day) · Screener price $15.37

IV 40% with an IV Rank of 28 (rank history 101 days — not yet mature; do not describe as a 52-week rank). HV30 47%; IV/HV 0.85. No dividend. High wheel score driven by profitability across all periods, strong EPS growth (+47%), and accelerating forward trajectory (+28%). Analyst consensus is positive.

⚠️ The weekly conservative $14.50 (OI 448) is the only strike with solid liquidity. The weekly $15 strikes (moderate and aggressive converge at the same mark) carry OI of 128. All monthly strikes are thin, with the $13.50 monthly carrying OI of 138, the $14 at 39, and the $15 at just 3. Any monthly strike written up here carries meaningful fill uncertainty.

Earnings not until Nov 12. The low per-share price means each contract controls 100 shares at modest notional — position sizing is flexible but the thin monthly liquidity limits scale.

5 · SMCI — Super Micro Computer · Wheel Score 88/100

Prior session: closed $37.00 (+0.79% on day, –1.04% five-day) · Screener price $36.24

IV 70% with an IV Rank of 25 (rank mature, 200-day history). HV30 86.4% — IV/HV ratio 0.81, meaning options are priced meaningfully below recent realised volatility. This is the highest-IV name in today's top 5 by a wide margin. Note: analyst consensus is mixed (hold-leaning per screener). SMCI is already held across multiple books — Weekly v1 CC ($44 strike, Sep 18), Ladder CSP ($34 strike, Sep 4), and Zacks (Sep 2) featured SMCI alongside NVIDIA in an AI infrastructure blog.

⚠️ The weekly conservative $33 (OI 834) offers the best liquidity in this name. Weekly moderate $34.50 (OI 76) and aggressive $35.50 (OI 82) are thin. All monthly strikes have OI under 50; the monthly moderate $32 is particularly thin at OI 19.

Earnings not until Nov 3. SMCI's 38% drawdown from its 52-week high is reflected in the elevated IV. Already-held positions mean any new consideration increases concentration in this name.

One name from the broader screener universe was withheld from IV and IV Rank disclosure this edition — it did not clear the publishability gate in the data packet. No IV or rank figures for that name will appear here.
